Harrison clear to continue fighting

25/04/2006

Scott Harrison has been granted a career lifeline after the WBO featherweight champion was released on bail following charges of disturbing the peace.

The 28-year-old Scot has been held in custody since Saturday night after he was arrested for fighting in a pub in Glasgow.

He appeared at Glasgow sheriff court yesterday where he also faced charges of refusing to leave a licensed premise, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. He has denied all the charges.

Had the judge not granted Harrison bail, he would have almost certainly been forced to call off his mandatory title defence against Mexican Martin Honorio at Kings' Hall in Belfast on May 25th.

This in turn could well have seen his expulsion from the sport by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC).

Harrison, managed by Frank Maloney, will now face trial in September this year but he will be able to continue boxing within that time.

His reputation will have been further soured by this latest instance, however, and many are questioning his right to be allowed to continue fighting in the ring.

Just last year, Harrison was barred from every pub in the Lanarkshire town of East Kilbridge for repeated violent outbursts.
