Harrison passes medical with fight in balance

16/11/2006

World Boxing Organisation featherweight champion Scott Harrison has been passed fit to fight by the British Boxing Board of Control after his release from a Spanish prison.

The 29-year-old's contest against Nicky Cook at London's Excel arena is due to take place on December 9th, but had been thrown into doubt as Harrison's attempts to secure bail took longer than expected.

But lawyer Massimo Franchi has claimed that his client is ready to defend his belt and that there are no health concerns over Harrison in spite of his five weeks of incarceration.

"We are still waiting on some bits and pieces including things like blood tests but that apart, Scott has come through his medical with flying colours," he said.

"He has undergone a physical and a psychiatric examination and he is in good shape, physically and mentally. So it has now been clarified by medics that he is fit to box."

The fight's promoter Frank Warren has already admitted that as the contracts between the fighters were signed before Harrison was held over an alleged theft and assault of a police officer there is little to prevent the fight going ahead.

"Legally, I am obliged to honour the contract and, providing he is passed fit to fight, then I have to honour that," he said.

"It is a sorry state of affairs all round but the prime consideration has to be to Scott's health first and foremost. But, if he is fit, then the fight will go ahead."

In what is the final potential obstacle to the clash taking place, the WBO will meet over the next few days to consider whether to sanction the fight.
