Harrison released from prison

13/11/2006

Boxing bad-boy Scott Harrison has been released from a Spanish jail over an alleged assault.

The Scot had been behind bars in Malaga since October 6th and will return to Glasgow on Tuesday afternoon.

His manager Barry Hughes insisted that Harrison would defend his WBO featherweight title against Nicky Cook in London on December 9th.

But the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) have said they will make a decision on the fight after Harrison has a medical.

Hughes said his concern was getting the 29-year-old into peak condition.

"I've no worries about the actual fight itself. My only concern is getting Scott to the fight," he said.

"On December 9th, after three or four rounds, Nicky Cook is going to find himself in a place he does not want to be.

"Scott is below the weight he would normally be at this time before a fight because obviously he hasn't been able to over-indulge."

Promoter Frank Warren said providing Harrison is fit the fight will go ahead.

He added: "It has been an unsatisfactory situation and has not been good for Scott or for the sport," he said.

"Legally, I am obliged to honour the contract and, providing he is passed fit to fight, then I have to honour that.

"We have the right to have him take a medical and he will undertake one with a doctor registered with the BBBC."

The WBO threatened to strip Harrison of his title on Friday over fears that the fight against Cook would be cancelled.

The Cambuslang fighter pulled out of a title defence against Gary St Clair in May due to alcohol problems and depression.
