Hatton-Mayweather fight agreed 'in principle'
29/07/2007
Ricky Hatton's father has confirmed that a deal has been agreed 'in principle' for his son to fight Floyd Mayweather later this year.
Ray Hatton claims that a verbal agreement has been made by the boxers' lawyers, including the crucial financial settlement.
The senior Hatton said "We have agreed a deal in principle but the date and venue is up in the air."
It appears most likely however to be either 10 November or 8 December in Las Vegas.
The venue will not be a problem for 'The Hitman', as it was there that he defeated Jose Luis Castillo on 24 June.
Both Hatton and Mayweather remain unbeaten, although the later has stated that his victory over Oscar de la Hoya last month would be his last before retirement.
"It is a great fight for Ricky. How many times do you get to fight the best fighter in the world? I see it as a win-win situation because Ricky cannot fail to impress," Ray Hatton said.
"Floyd is coming off a great win over De La Hoya and Ricky over Castillo. Between them they are unbeaten in 81 fights. There is nowhere else it could happen. It would be an unbelievable fight."
Mayweather is seen as the best 'pound for pound' fighter in the world at present despite his retirement and the fight would be Hatton's toughest fight to date.
