Haye-Maccarinelli fight still distant

21/12/2006

The chances of a contest between British cruiserweights Enzo Maccarinelli and David Haye seemed to narrow today as Maccarinelli's camp denounced the purse on offer as "outrageous".

Promoter Frank Warren, who represents the Welsh WBO champion, slammed the £150,000 offer put to his client to appear in what would be a money-spinning match-up.

He also questioned the far larger fee that Haye was to be paid in the scheme put forward by the European titleholder's team.

"Enzo is world champion and should be taking the lion's share. Asking for £250,000 for Haye is outrageous. If Haye is so confident, he should step up and take a few risks," said Warren.

"Haye fights in front of a few hundred people at York Hall. Meanwhile, Maccarinelli is a genuine world champion, appears on prime time ITV and personally sold 3,000 tickets for one of his fights."

The charismatic Haye is the WBC number-two ranked contender, but had hoped to lure Maccarinelli into a 12-round fight in April with no titles on the line.

It could be that Maccarinelli is aiming his sights higher than Haye, however, after stating that a clash with reigning WBA and WBC champion O'Neill Bell was his aim earlier this year.
