Haye eyes heavyweight success after Maccarinelli victory
09/03/2008
David Haye may move up to heavyweight after his comfortable knockout victory over Enzo Maccarinelli last night.
After defeating Maccarinelli in less than two rounds in the anticipated all-British cruiserweight clash at London's O2 Arena last night, the 27-year-old was quick to indicate his next targets.
"Enzo came here with a good record but I showed what the 'Hayemaker' is all about. No cruiserweight can live with my power and no heavyweight either," the London-based boxer said.
Haye came into the fight after winning 19 of his previous 20 bouts by knockout and a crowd of 20,000 saw his punching power work to great effect against Maccarinelli in the early stages.
A straight right from Haye early in the second round drew blood from a cut above Maccarinelli's left eye and then a trademark combination of blows sent the Welshman to the canvas seconds later.
Ending the bout two minutes into the round, referee John Keane handed Haye - the current WBC and WBA champion - an emphatic victory.
"I talked the talk and walked the walk
I know how hard I punch and I've got my body into ridiculous condition over the last nine months," Haye commented after his victory.
"It was all about putting on a good show for an American audience because they really crave an exciting heavyweight who is not scared to put it on the line and hopefully they realise that's me," he added, as reported by the BBC.
"If I've got to go to Russia or to Vegas, I'll go there. As long as there's a ring and a referee who can count to ten, I'm sorted," Haye stated.
