Haye raises sights to heavyweight
19/04/2007
British cruiserweight David Haye is to take his first steps up into the heavyweight division with an April 27th fight against Tomasz Bonin at Wembley Arena.
The fast-talking Londoner is already the mandatory challenger to Jean Marc Momeck, the WBC and WBA cruiserweight champion, but is ready to take a risk to see if he can follow the legendary Evander Holyfield's route to the sport's top table.
"I am 6ft 3in and 16-and-a-half stone is my natural weight. I feel that I can be the heavyweight champion of the world," Haye said.
"The modern day trend is for heavyweights of my size as it is increasingly coming down to skill, speed and pedigree. I like the way the heavyweight scene is looking and I feel I can clean up."
His Polish opponent is ranked 11th in the world and eager to make amends for the stoppage he suffered at the hands of Audley Harrison on his last outing in the UK.
"It will be a good fight. I am coming to the UK to win. I lost my first fight here under suspicious circumstances and I am coming to Wembley to win. I want to fight for a championship next," Bonin said.
Haye has suffered just one defeat in 19 professional fights with all but one of his victories coming inside time.
