Haye wins on heavyweight debut
28/04/2007
David Haye beat Poland's Tomasz Bonin on his heavyweight debut at Wembley Arena with a first round stoppage.
The European cruiserweight champion made light work of his opponent and the referee stopped the fight after one min 45 seconds of the bout.
Bonin was ranked as the 11th best heavyweight in the world by the WBC but the 33-year-old was completely outclassed by the Briton who was a stone lighter than his opponent at the weigh-in.
Haye began the fight at full tilt and soon had Bonin on the floor with a flurry of straight punches and forced the Pole to take a standing eight count. Bonin was down again shortly after but rose to his feet quickly.
The 26-year-old from London then moved in for the kill and knocked the Pole down for the third and final time and was awarded the fight by TKO.
After the fight Haye explained that he had been hoping for a tougher test.
He said: "To be honest, I was looking for a long fight. I'd trained for 12 hard rounds. I was really looking to testing out my defence and seeing what I'd learnt from the [Giacobbe] Fragomeni fight."
Haye will now look to claim the WBC cruiserweight title from Jean-Marc Mormeck having won the opportunity to take him on by beating Fragomeni last November.
Speaking about the potential match up Haye said: "I would be mad not to take that fight and knock him out. I want that title."
His record is now 19 wins in 20 fights with 18 of those victories by knockout.
