Heavyweight Haye a stone lighter

27/04/2007

David Haye weighed in a full stone lighter than his opponent Tomasz Bonin ahead of his heavyweight debut tonight.

Haye weighed in at 15st 7lbs while Bonin tipped the scales at 16st 7lbs, as the two men prepare to face-off at Wembley Arena.

The 26-year-old Briton is well-known as a talented cruiserweight boxer but he will be giving away a significant amount to his Polish adversary as he looks to take the step up in weight division.

Bonin has been defeated just once in his 38-fight professional career, by British fighter Audley Harrison in 2004, and will pose a good challenge for Haye, who described him as "solid".

"He's expected to use his weight advantage to try and rough me up," the London native said.

"I don't underestimate him at all. I've seen a lot of his fights – he's strong, has a very good chin and he's durable. I don't expect to take him out early."

Haye's record at cruiserweight level is good, having lost just once to British veteran Carl Thompson in 2004.

However the fleet-footed fighter faces what he himself has described in the past as a "crazy step up" – completing a childhood dream of competing in the showcase weight class.
