Holyfield to continue boxing

22/05/2006

Evander Holyfield has said that he will not retire from boxing until he becomes undisputed heavyweight champion again.

The 43-year-old has been world champion on four occasions but he has not fought since November 2004, when he racked up his third defeat on the spin with a points defeat to Larry Donald.

However, despite many within the world of boxing telling the American to retire, Holyfield insists there is plenty of fight still left in him.

"I want to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world again and that could be eight fights, could be ten, could be more away," Holyfield told Sky Sports News.

"I wouldn't talk about it if I didn't think I could do it but this time I'm going to do it a little differently and I'm going to work my way up."

Holyfield was stripped of his medical licence to box by the New York State Athletic Commission after his defeat to Donald and he would not be able to fight again until he regained it.

However, despite age being against him, he believes that he can go out on top and he will not retire until he does so.

"If people really knew me they know I'm supposed to be on top, and that's how I am supposed to retire," Holyfield added.

"How many people are still a champ when they retired? I choose to retire as a champion."

George Foreman is currently the oldest man in history to become heavyweight champion, winning the title aged 45 in 1994.
