Hopkins victory spurs Calzaghe to continue fighting

22/04/2008

Joe Calzaghe says is keen to carry on fighting following his success against Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

It was Calzaghe's first appearance at light-heavyweight, and although he remains the undisputed champion at super-middleweight, it is likely his future remains at 175lbs.

Before the Hopkins fight Calzaghe had said we wanted just one more fight. The Welshman is prepared to stand by that statement for now but admits he could be tempted to go beyond that and keep fighting.

He said: "To be honest it's probably one more fight. They are the famous last words of many fighters. We'll have to wait and see."

Having unified the super-middleweight division, and now defeated a long-term nemesis in Hopkins, Calzaghe is happy to see other fighters who have dodged him in the past are now prepared to take him on.

A fight against former four-weight world champion Roy Jones Junior has been mentioned but IBF super-middleweight champion Antonio Tarver could be another possible opponent.

Calzaghe explained: "It's amazing. For so many years I was avoided and all of a sudden everyone wants to fight me. It's a great position to be in, I'm going to enjoy this win and go on holiday.

"At the start of the year I said I wanted two big fights and I've got one out of the way. Roy Jones is a possibility. I'll weigh it up but the next fight is going to have to be a super-fight," Calzaghe added.

The 36-year-old Welshman has now won all 45 of his professional fights. ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18563398-ADNFCR
