Jones Jr claims points win

30/07/2006

Former light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr has ended a run of three straight defeats with a unanimous points win over Prince Badi Ajamu in Idaho.

Despite a busy start from the 34-year-old, Jones Jr was rarely troubled by his opponent and all three judges awarded him the fight 119-106.

The 37-year-old, who was once considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, insisted he was now looking for a title fight, with Wales' IBF/WBO super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe a potential opponent.

"The champ is back but I only give myself a 'C' for that performance," Jones Jr said.

The victory was Jones Jr's first for over two and a half years, having lost twice to Antonio Tarver and once to Jamaica's Glencoffe Johnson, and he admitted he had been training for nine months in preparation for the Ajamu bout.

However, a fight with Calzaghe has been mooted in the past and his promoter, Frank Warren, said in March there was no possibility of it happening.

Jones Jr has won five titles at four different weights during his career.

On the undercard, William Guthrie became the IBF international cruiserweight champion after he claimed the vacant belt by stopping Luke Munsen in the fifth round.

Guthrie, the former IBF light-heavyweight champion, had already put his opponent on the canvas earlier on in the round before the referee was forced to stop the bout midway through the round as Guthrie swarmed all over Munsen.
