Jones wants Calzaghe bout
16/01/2008
Former four-weight world champion Roy Jones Junior says he wants to face Joe Calzaghe later in the year.
Jones is fighting Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Gardens on Saturday night and the Puerto Rican claims he would like to fight the Welshman as well.
Thus their bout could turn in to an eliminator to take on Calzaghe, with the Welshman likely to make only a few more appearances before retiring.
Calzaghe has been looking to fight Jones for years but has been unable to catch the attention of America's top fighters until becoming undisputed super-middleweight champion last year.
Jones said he would be prepared to travel to Wales to face Calzaghe as the challenger for those belts.
He said: "For all his titles, I'd go to Wales. I want Calzaghe. If I've got the titles, he has to come and get it but he's got the titles so I have to go and get it.
"The only thing left to accomplish that I've thought about is if I go down and regain the super-middleweight title."
Trinidad also feels he would benefit from moving back down into Calzaghe's weight category.
He said "After I win [against Jones], and I intend to win, there are a lot of guys out there - but Joe Calzaghe is in my vision and in my future I will go after him too.
"I feel stronger at 168, 170 pounds than at 160, so Joe Calzaghe is one of my top priorities."
However Calzaghe may be reluctant to accept a challenge from either man as he has insisted his future lies at light-heavyweight.
