Khan charged with dangerous driving

28/06/2006

Amir Khan, Britain's brightest teenage boxing prospect, has been charged with dangerous driving after breaking the leg of a 40-year-old man in an accident earlier this year.

Khan, 19, was arrested on Saturday in connection with the accident, Greater Manchester police confirmed, and appeared at Bolton magistrates' court today.

He was subsequently bailed after a brief appearance and is due to reappear in court at a later date. Khan could be hit with a jail sentence if found guilty.

Such a sentence could be devastating for the boxing future of the brilliant light welterweight who has enjoyed a seven-fight unbeaten start to his professional career.

He is also due to take to the ring against Colin Bain at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in a fortnight's time, although this could now be in doubt.

Khan signed off from the amateur ranks in 2004 by winning a silver medal at the Athens Olympic Games and has been touted as destined to become Britain's youngest ever boxing world champion.

Today's news comes just a month after his boxing hero and close friend, former world featherweight champion Prince Naseem Hamed was jailed for 15 months on a similar charge.

Hamed, 32, was said to be considering a comeback to the sport before he was found guilty of reckless driving after causing a 38-year-old man multiple injuries when his £300,000 Mercedes sports car collided head on with two other vehicles.
