Khan denies dangerous driving charge
27/07/2006
Britain's teenage boxing star Amir Khan has today pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving.
The 19-year-old appeared at Bolton magistrates court this morning having missed Monday's planned hearing because he was on holiday in Bulgaria.
He denied the charge against him and the case has now been transferred to Bolton crown court where a hearing will be held on September 21st. He has been granted unconditional bail.
Khan was arrested by police last month following the accident on March 2nd this year which left a 40-year-old man with a broken leg.
The Bolton boxer is widely regarded as being Britain's brightest prospect and has enjoyed an impressive eight-fight unbeaten start to his professional career since signing off from the amateur ranks in 2004 by winning a silver medal at the Athens Olympic Games.
His trial comes just over a month after his boxing hero and close friend, former world featherweight champion Prince Naseem Hamed was jailed for 15 months on a similar charge.
Hamed, 32, was said to be considering a comeback to the sport before he was found guilty of reckless driving after causing a 38-year-old man multiple injuries when his £300,000 Mercedes sports car collided head on with two other vehicles.
