Khan goes the distance

21/05/2006

Amir Khan was taken the full six rounds for the first time in his professional career but he maintained his 100 per cent record with a points victory over Hungary's Laszlo Komjathi.

The Bolton fighter had never been taken beyond the fourth round in his last six fights and he had said before the bout in Belfast that he wanted ring experience before he could think about targeting America.

Komjathi gave him that challenge, with Khan coming out on top 60-55 on points, and he admitted afterwards that the fight had been an education for him.

"I'm getting the hang of being a pro, I needed a fight like this," Khan told ITV Sport.

"I learnt a lot in that fight, it's all good experience and I know what six rounds feel like now so I can work on that."

While Khan never looked in any serious danger, Komjathi showed in the opening round that he would be a tougher opponent than Khan had faced before when he caught the teenager with a good left.

However, Khan got into his stride quickly and showed his power early in the second when a good right-left combination rocked the Hungarian and he was lucky to end the round on his feet as Khan opened up with some good shots with both hands.

Komjathi produced his best moment at the start of the fourth when he took advantage of Khan dropping his guard slightly and delivered a good combination to the chin.

However, Khan remained on top for the rest of the fight and was deserving of his win.
