Khan looking to impress stateside

17/02/2007

Amir Khan is hoping to move a step closer to a shot at a world lightweight title with a convincing victory over French opponent Mohammed Medjadi this evening.

Medjadi is only Khan's 11th professional opponent and boasts an impressive record of three defeats in 20 fights, but already the Bolton youngster is looking beyond to his aim of landing a major belt before his 21st birthday.

"Six months ago, I went to see Muhammad Ali and a lot of people seemed to know about me. It would be great to get exposure and fight over there," he said of his recent travels to the USA.

Khan's is scheduled to fight on the undercard of Joe Calzaghe's middleweight title defence against Peter Manfredo Junior on April 7th.

It is a bout that will be televised in America by HBO, giving the light-welterweight a major chance to seize the attention of America's boxing public.

However Khan's promoter, Frank Warren, is attempting to rein in the expectations surrounding his young charge.

"If he comes through Saturday OK he will fight on April 7th. That will get a lot of exposure and it will be another step on the ladder for him, but he has a tough fight ahead of him first," he said.

"It is important he takes it one fight at a time."
