Khan seeks new trainer following recent knockout
20/09/2008
Former Commonwealth lightweight champion Amir Khan is searching for a new trainer after parting ways with Cuban Jorge Rubio.
Rubio was with Khan for only one fight but presided over the Bolton man's only professional defeat to Bredis Prescott earlier this month.
The Cuban had the reputation for being an excellent defence skills coach, an area Khan has shown a weakness in, but could not impart enough knowledge to prevent Prescott knocking out Khan inside 54 seconds.
Khan is reportedly travelling to America this week to speak to Freddie Roach, who has trained some of boxing's all-time greats.
Roach coached Oscar de la Hoya for his bout last year with Floyd Mayweather Junior and has also worked with four-weight world champion Manny Pacquiao, former middleweight king Bernard Hopkins and Mike Tyson.
The American also coached Steve Collins to the world super-middleweight title during the 1990s.
Roach told the Sun newspaper that a partnership between himself and Khan could be on the cards.
He said: "Amir is coming here to California with his father and attorney.
"They want to talk to me about rebuilding his career. I heard he suffered a bad knockout."
Khan's business manager Asif Vali also admitted: "We are away this weekend but will be making a formal statement about Amirs training regime next week."
Khan is now looking to appoint his fourth coach in as many months having parted ways with long-time corner man Oliver Harrison over a pay dispute.
Dean Powell then took over for one fight until Rubio was appointed, only for the Cuban to be sent packing after one bout as well.
