Khan shows fighting spirit to beat Limond
15/07/2007
Amir Khan was forced to overcome a knock down before defeating Scotland's Willie Limond for the Commonwealth lightweight title in London.
Khan won the fight when Limond failed to come out of his corner for the ninth round after suffering a broken jaw.
The fight was Khan's toughest of his short career as Limond tested the 20-year-old's defences and landed with some telling blows throughout the contest.
Khan had the edge in the opening rounds. Working his jab well the Bolton fighter was able to keep Limond at a safe distance while his speed allowed him to land some combinations.
Limond worked himself into the fight, hoping to test Khan's endurance over the 12 round distance.
The Glaswegian upped the pace in the sixth round and sent Khan reeling to the floor with a flurry of punches that appeared to shake the Olympic silver medallist.
But Khan was able to make it through the rest of the round as Limond struggled to find the killer blow.
The tables turned in dramatic fashion in the next round as Khan came out of his corner looking determined. He proceeded to unleash a series of blows that left the defending champion bloodied.
Khan landed with a right uppercut, which may have caused Limond's broken jaw, and the Scotsman was sent crashing to the floor.
The challenger continued to press home his advantage in the eighth round and looked to have broken Limond's resolve and his corner decided to retire him at the end of the round.
Khan is now undefeated in 13 fights as a professional with ten of those victories coming by way of knockout.
