Lewis comeback on the cards

24/02/2007

Lennox Lewis could be on the verge of a shock return to the ring, if reports from his US promoter are to be believed.

Lewis is thought to be interested in a rematch with Ukrainian fighter Vitali Klitschko who he beat in his final bout in June 2003.

Klitschko himself retired in 2004 but said last month that he was preparing to return to the ring as he feels he has sufficiently recovered from a knee injury which was keeping him out of action.

Lewis is now 41 but the prospect of one last big payday could lure him back to face his former foe.

The Briton's US promoter Bob Aurum said: "Lennox has been discussing with his pals at HBO the prospect of a one-off world title rematch with Klitschko.

"No matter how often a boxer says he will never come back, the money always talks louder in the end if the offer is big enough. I am told Lennox is back in the gym and this is an enormous fight in the making."

British promoter Frank Warren has called for Lewis to rethink his plans if he is contemplating a return as he feels any match could potentially harm his legacy as a great fighter.

He said: "Of course if he did come back it would be a big fight. People have been talking about it since Klitschko announced his comeback."

Klitschko has always wanted a return fight after he was knocked out by Lewis in their 2003 bout, despite being ahead on the judges' scorecards.
