Lewis denies comeback reports

25/02/2007

Former heavyweight world champion Lennox Lewis has denied reports made yesterday in which his US promoter Bob Aurum claimed he was preparing for a return to the ring.

Lewis said that he has never contemplated a return at any time since he announced his retirement in 2004 and was enjoying spending time with his young family.

He said: "Although I'm flattered that the boxing community is eager to have me back in the ring, I have no plans to return.

"I have no idea how these rumours get started, but I'm a man of my word - I will remain retired. I'm happy with my life and I don't need to chase a big payday."

Aurum had yesterday suggested that there could be a rematch between Lewis and Ukrainian fighter Vitali Klitschko, who the Briton beat in his last ever bout.

Interest in the heavyweight division has declined since Lewis retired and any potential match-up would have netted a large audience. However, at 41 years of age the former champ says his fighting day are over.

He said: "I'm proud of what I accomplished as champion and confident that my legacy will remain intact."

Lewis retired while he was still world heavyweight champion, a feat achieved only by two others, Gene Tunney and Rocky Marciano.

Klitschko was always keen to take on Lewis one more time but will now have to turn his attentions elsewhere.

The Ukrainian is now likely to target a world title fight against WBC champion Oleg Maskaev of Russia.
