Maccarinelli stuns Dominguez in Cardiff
09/07/2006
Enzo Maccarinelli has claimed the interim WBO cruiserweight title after knocking down rival Marcelo Dominguez in round nine.
The decisive blow came in the form of a huge right uppercut which sent Dominguez sprawling towards the ropes. Maccarinelli will now be looking for a chance to take on injured champion Johnny Nelson who is at risk of losing his crown.
An engaging encounter saw both men hurling devastating blows, with Dominguez actually gaining momentum in the round before he was knocked down in such spectacular fashion.
But at just 5 foot 9 inches, 36-year-old Dominguez found himself punching up at the Swansea man and was eventually caught out when he became a little too confident in his attack.
Maccarinelli admitted: "Dominguez is a very tough man and he landed some good shots but that worked to my advantage because I went out there to box him and be patient and then I stepped up to finish him off."
Frank Warren, meanwhile, heaped praise on his young fighter and warned Johnny Nelson that he will be in for a tough test if he agrees to the fight.
Before last night, Macarinelli's last outing saw him win on points against Mark Hobson in a distinctly lacklustre display, but the fight against Dominguez seemed to draw the best out of him once more.
