Mayweather rips into "fat" Hatton

05/02/2007

Floyd Mayweather has ripped into British fighter Ricky Hatton, claiming he is "nothing but a fat man" and is "not good enough to be my sparring partner".

The American is due to retire from boxing after his scheduled fight against Oscar de la Hoya in Las Vegas in May, although Mayweather hinted that he could still come to Britain for a long-awaited showdown with Hatton.

The Briton has been tracking the outspoken American champion for several years and is keen to tie down Mayweather to a definite commitment to a fight, and this appears to be a step closer in light of the multi-weight division champion's comments.

"He looked like garbage [in his last fight against Juan Urango]," Mayweather told the BBC, before adding: "Just because I've retired in America doesn't mean I can't fight in the UK."

In response to comments made by the Manchester-born fighter claiming he was better to watch than Mayweather, the American didn't hold back.

"It's obvious his fights are not more exciting than mine," he went on.

"The cheques don't lie – he said he can fill 5,000 seats in America, well guess what? I can sell that out in minutes. Nobody knows Ricky Hatton here and I could come and fill up an entire soccer stadium in England. People want to see me fight.

"I'm gonna punch him in his beer belly when I see him. He's nothing but a fat man."
