Mayweather stops Mitchell
20/11/2005
WBC light welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather lived up to his self-proclaimed tag to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world with a comfortable win over Sharmba Mitchell in Portland.
The 28-year-old stopped Mitchell in the sixth round after dominating the fight throughout, finishing off his opponent with a straight right hand.
Mitchell, who had only been beaten twice since 1994, on both occasions by former IBF champion Kostya Tszyu, was no match for Mayweather. who landed 85 punches compared to Mitchell's 31.
The 35-year-old could not cope with Mayweather's quick hand speed and was behind on the judges' scorecards from round one.
Mayweather looked comfortable, living up to his pre-fight boasts that the match would be like a public workout, and knocked his opponent down in the third round.
The champion had won three of his last four fights inside six rounds and this contest was almost over in the fifth as Mayweather produced a fierce left to Mitchell's head.
Mitchell didn't last much longer and a straight right sealed the victory in the sixth.
Mayweather could now be in line for a fight with current IBF champion Ricky Hatton, while Oscar de la Hoya has also been mooted as a future opponent for Mayweather.
