Mayweather takes WBC welterweight crown

05/11/2006

Floyd Mayweather gave further evidence to claims that he is the best pound for pound fighter in the world by beating Carlos Baldomir to claim the WBC welterweight title on a unanimous points decision in Las Vegas.

The classy American was awarded every round by two of the judges at ringside while the other had him ahead in ten of the 12 rounds, resulting in a resounding victory.

Mayweather out fought his Argentinean opponent and was quick to avoid the swinging blows coming in his direction, despite being the lighter man Mayweather had predicted he was too fast for Baldomir and was proved right.

As the fight progressed and Baldomir tired Mayweather simply stayed out of trouble, much to the crowd's displeasure, but after the fight said that he could not deliver the crucial blow due to a hand injury he sustained.

Afterwards he said: "I fought a perfect fight, I can win under any circumstances."

Baldomir bemoaned his lack of penetrating blows explaining: "He was just too fast and I couldn't catch him and when I did catch him I felt sluggish."

At the age of 35 the Argentine's career may be at an end, however, he reflected that he had enjoyed a great year by beating Zab Judah to win the title, defending it against Arturo Gatti and then taking on Mayweather.

Mayweather remains unbeaten in 37 fights and has taken 24 of them by knockout. After the fight he suggested his next opponent could be ring legend Oscar de la Hoya.
