Rahman named world champion

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has named Hasim Rahman as 'interim world champion' after the retirement of champion Vitali Klitschko.

The president of the WBC Jose Sulaiman has also announced that Rahman will be upgraded to world champion.

Sulaiman said: "Hasim Rahman has all the merits to become the undisputed champion after the retirement of Vitali Klitschko.

"The WBC has received a majority voting of the board of governors to declare Hasim Rahman the undisputed WBC heavyweight champion of the world."

The WBC will hold an official ceremony at which Rahman will be crowned champion of the world.

Rahman is promoted by Don King and King now promotes all four heavyweight boxers who hold world championship belts.

The WBC president confirmed that a meeting of the board of governors of the WBC will be held in the near future in order to plan the next steps in the division.

Hasim Rahman is most likely to fight Sinan Samil Sam, Oleg Maskaev, James Toney or Wladimir Klitschko in his first bout as world champion.
