Takaloo takes crown from Magee

21/05/2006

Eamonn Magee has lost his WBU welterweight crown after a majority points decision in favour of Takaloo.

The Northern Irishman was appearing in only his second fight since he suffered a punctured lung and a fractured knee after being attacked in the street in Belfast in March 2004.

However, in front of his home fans, Magee couldn't overcome his Margate-based opponent and the judges awarded the bout 116-112 115-113 114-114 in Takaloo's favour.

"I proved tonight that you cannot write me off because I keep coming back and in there tonight against a good fighter I felt stronger than ever," Takaloo said.

"Magee did not come to fight in there and it was just a case of trying to hunt him down but I managed to do it and I am so happy."

Overall, the bout was a fairly negative affair with neither fighter producing a moment which would have won him the fight.

Takaloo's best moment came in the seventh when he landed two good rights, while Magee dominated the eighth but never looked like knocking over his opponent.

Meanwhile, Danny Williams produced a sketchy performance to overcome Adnan Serin inside three rounds.

The British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion only took the fight after Scott Harrison withdrew from his bout because of personal problems and both boxers looked ill-prepared.

Williams did put his German opponent on the canvas in the first round but Serin was forced to retire on his stool at the end of the third round because of a cut and badly bruised left eye.
