Warren ditches troubled Harrison

07/12/2006

Promoter Frank Warren has ended his association with Scott Harrison after the WBO featherweight champion failed to make the weight for his title defence against Nicky Cook on Saturday.

Harrison's fight was the main feature of the undercard for the London ExCel event that Warren's promotions company, Sports Network, have organised.

"Scott Harrison is gone, he's out of it, and there are a lot more young hungry fighters coming up who are the future," Warren said.

"I was put in a position where I had to honour his contract to let him fight when he was passed fit and sometimes these things are out of your control.

"I feel most sorry for Nicky Cook because he had got himself into great shape for this fight, but I've promised him I'll get him a world title shot again in the spring."

Harrison's preparations for the fight were thrown into disarray when he was held on charges of assault and theft for five weeks in a prison in the Spanish city of Malaga.

After desperate attempts to secure his bail finally succeeded, the 29-year-old Scot passed a British Boxing Board of Control medical to seemingly save his career.

But, after taking medical advice, his team today announced that the disruptions had left him with insufficient time to make the weight and that he would lose his title on the scales.
