Warren pulls plug on Braehead fight night

13/03/2006

Boxing promoter Frank Warren has cancelled the planned fight night at Glasgow's Braehead Arena on Saturday 25th March after Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams was forced to pull out through injury.

Williams was only called on to the bill as a late replacement for WBO world featherweight champion Scott Harrison, who himself had to withdraw.

Harrison was meant to be making the ninth defence of his title against Joan Guzman of the Dominican Republic but pulled out because of a mouth abscess.

However, Williams sustained an unspecified injury over the weekend while in training for his fight against a still-unnamed opponent and has also been forced to cancel.

Warren decided against drafting in another fighter to top the bill which also included British starlet Amir Khan, who was due to make his seventh professional fight against Argentinean Diego Alejandro Madole.

Instead, Warren's company, Sports Network, is refunding all ticket holders and is now focusing on promoting the next event at the Kings Hall in Belfast on Saturday 20th May.

Harrison and Khan will definitely fight in Northern Ireland and Williams could also be called on to the bill.
