Warren unveils 'cracking' domestic bill

27/04/2006

Joe Calzaghe, Danny Williams, Matt Skelton, Enzo Maccarinelli and Amir Khan will all fight on what promises to be one of the best domestic boxing bills ever staged, Frank Warren today revealed.

The five British fighters will be appearing on a bill on July 8th at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and, between them, four titles will be on the line.

Calzaghe, the WBO and IBF super-middleweight king, will be topping the bill with a first defence of his combined titles against an-as-yet unnamed opponent.

An all-time high audience is expected to tune in for his fight after his defining clash with Jeff Lacy in March resulted in unprecedented viewing figures despite its 02:00 BST start time.

Commonwealth heavyweight champion Williams will again face British champ Skelton in a rematch of their vicious first fight back in February, which the Brixton Bomber won via a split points decision.

Meanwhile, Maccarinelli is expected to fight for the interim WBO cruiserweight title while great lightweight hope Khan will take part in his eighth professional contest.

"I love putting on big shows, and this is definitely a big one," promoter Warren said at a press conference today.

"There's a real buzz around boxing at the moment, especially after Joe's terrific performance against Lacy, and this card should be a cracker."
