Williams given British title shot
14/07/2006
Danny Williams has been given a chance to resurrect his boxing career after being made the mandatory challenger for new British heavyweight champion Scott Gammer.
A notice from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) has announced that the fight will take place "by the end of November".
Williams, who turned 33 yesterday, lost his Commonwealth title on a unanimous points decision to Matt Skelton in Cardiff last weekend.
The Brixton Bomber came into the fight overweight and looked lacklustre, struggling to cope with the movement of the older and less experienced Skelton.
Suggestions were made that Williams may call it a day after the disappointing defeat but now he will look to regain the British title he held between 2000 and 2004.
His previous stint as the national champion was ended by Michael Sprott at Wembley but it did lead to him landing a career-defining fight against ageing legend Mike Tyson in Louisville, Kentucky six months later.
A stunning fourth round knockout of Tyson then saw him given a near impossible world title fight against now-retired WBC champion Vitali Klitschko and while Williams was emphatically beaten, he will be hoping he can tread a similar path to the top over the next 12 months.
Welshman Gammer has never lost a professional bout, boasting 16 wins, nine KOs, and one draw from his 17 fights, but he has never fought anyone of the experience or power of Williams.
Williams holds a record of 36 wins, 29 KOs and five losses from his 41 fights but will know this could be his last chance to fulfil his father's dream of seeing his son lift a world title.
