Williams may retire after defeat
10/12/2006
Former British and Commonwealth champion Danny Williams says it may be time for him to quit boxing following his third round knockout loss to Audley Harrison last night.
Williams was cut badly below his left eye, a wound which required six stitches, and also suffered a broken nose during the two-and-a-half round onslaught which Harrison unleashed on Williams and he says the fight may have been his last.
He said: "Maybe for me it might be time to say goodbye. Audley is number one now and people should support him, but that may well be the last time you see me in there."
Williams had stepped in at relatively short notice after Matt Skelton was injured in training but maintained that was not an excuse for the loss.
"I was ready for this fight, I had been in training for eight weeks so I felt well prepared, there are no excuses," he said, before admitting that "to be fair to Audley he was on the top of his game".
It was the sixth defeat of his professional career, the highlight of which was a stunning victory over Mike Tyson in 2004 which led on to a world title shot against Vitali Klitschko which he eventually lost.
Williams had beaten Harrison in the same venue 12 months ago to claim the Commonwealth title but then lost that to Matt Skelton earlier this year.
