Williams to take on Gammer in Port Talbot
14/08/2006
Danny Williams has been given one final chance to rescue his ailing boxing career with a shot at the British heavyweight title in October.
Williams, 33, lost his Commonwealth belt, and with it a possible world title bout, when he was defeated by Matt Skelton at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium last month.
However, it has been confirmed today he will face British champion Scott Gammer at the Afan Lido in Port Talbot on October 13th as he looks to get back on track.
Gammer, 29, won the British belt, vacated by Skelton, in June after knocking out Mark Krence at the Showground in Carmarthen, Wales.
He is unbeaten in his 16-fight career, with nine wins coming via knockout, but he has never fought anyone of the experience or calibre of Williams, who went eight rounds with the now-retired Vitali Klitschko in a world title fight in December 2004.
Williams was made the mandatory challenger to the British title, a belt he has previously held, after his defeat by Skelton but Gammer's manager Paul Boyce has only today agreed the purse bid to stage the fight.
Speaking after last month's Commonwealth fight, Gammer, known as The Hammer, said he believes he can pull off a victory and hold on to his title against Williams.
"I honestly can't wait for this fight," he said. "I have always known that if I were to get in the ring with him, then I could beat him, and now I'll get that chance.
"I'm not sure how much of a boost it is for me personally to fight a name like Williams, but this big fight will really be a boost for all the fans who came down to support me, and to fight in a bigger arena will give more people a chance to come and see the fight."
