Williams too strong for Gammer

03/03/2007

Danny Williams has regained the British heavyweight title after beating Scott Gammer with a ninth round knockout in Wales last night.

The 33-year-old went into the fight with his weight the lowest it has ever been since his pro debut in 1995, having lost more than two stones since his defeat to Audley Harrison last December.

Despite being the heavier fighter, Gammer struggled to hurt Williams with any blows, although his work rate was to be admired and scored well with the judges.

Having traded rounds in the early stages Williams put all of his experience to use by dominating the middle stages, looking to come forward at every opportunity.

Gammer, 30, continued to use his jab; however, the Welshman could not find enough to threaten Williams.

The eighth round was Gammer's best. He attacked Williams with full gusto and looked to have finally worn down his opponent in the closing seconds as he landed a number of blows that shook Williams' head.

But this seemed to fire Williams up and the Brixton fighter centred in on his target from the start of the ninth round.

Gammer was forced to retreat to the ropes but Williams had him in his sights and eventually a right hook to the temple caused the inevitable knockout.

It was a must-win fight for Williams after his defeat to Harrison three months ago but the new champion then shocked everyone by announcing that it may have been his last fight.

He said: "I'll go home and analyse the tape and if I think there is not much more I can do, that's it for Danny Williams. In a few days I'll make up my mind see if there is much left I can do and if not, I'm off."

Williams' career record is now 37 wins and six loses from 43 fights.
