Williams' weight of history

08/07/2006

Brixton-based boxer Danny Williams has scaled in at more than twenty stone prior to tonight's Commonwealth heavyweight title re-match against Matthew Skelton in Cardiff.

Weighing 20st 8lbs, Williams is more than two stone heavier than Skelton, but the Londoner believes that this will not adversely affect his chances.

"I'm ready for anything and will have much more power to push Skelton back. It hasn't affected my speed – I feel absolutely tremendous."

In their previous encounter in February, Williams won a narrow points victory against his 39-year-old opponent and has allegedly spent 12 hours a day in an oxygen tent to give himself a competitive advantage.

Skelton has enjoyed a rapid ascent to the top of British boxing summit, having only turned professional just over three years ago.

Having learnt his trade as a K1 kick-boxer in Japan in the 1990s, Skelton has since beaten many British boxers, such as Michael Sprott and Keith Long with a highly physical if technically limited style.

In his seventh professional fight, Amir Khan will also be taking on Glasgow's Colin Blain on the undercard.
