Witter takes shot at doubters
16/09/2006
The new WBC light welterweight title holder Junior Witter has hit out at his doubters following his unanimous points victory over American DeMarcus Corley.
Witter took the opportunity to belittle the sceptics in an interview directly after the fight, which took place at Alexandra Palace in London on Friday night.
Despite emerging victorious from 36 of his previous 39 professional bouts, many observers doubted Witter's ability to produce his best form on the big stage but the Bradford-born fighter, dubbed 'The Hitter' said he had proved them wrong.
"A lot of people did not have faith in me, from before I turned pro but I have proved them all wrong," he said.
Witter praised his opponent, saying he had "a great chin" but equally lauded the relative ease of his points victory.
"We always knew we were in a technical battle. He's a good, thinking fighter and he threw bombs as you saw - and I landed more than he did," Witter continued.
"I never felt in any trouble. I won it comfortably. I'm the world champ and I'm on top of the world."
With this title fight victory, the Briton erased the painful memory of his previous world title bout, which ended in defeat to Zab Judah in an IBF belt contest.
