Woodhouse claims debut pro win

09/09/2006

Former footballer Curtis Woodhouse has won his debut fight as a boxer with a points victory over Dean Marcoantonio in London.

The ex-Birmingham City midfielder sent his opponent to the canvas twice inside four rounds before being awarded the bout 40-35.

Afterwards, the 26-year-old admitted it was 'brilliant' to get a win under his belt.

"I felt I could have boxed better, and have done in the gym, but I have to be pleased with the win considering it was the first time I've ever boxed in public," Woodhouse said.

"There are always things you can do better and I know I will improve."

Woodhouse gave up his footballing career with Grimsby Town after last season when he decided to pursue professional boxing.

While a lot of attention had been placed on him, he fought well before knocking Marcoantonio down twice in the final round; once with a left hook then with a straight left.

The former England under-21 international admitted he was a little nervous beforehand but he now wants to fight again as soon as possible.

"The worst thing was all those people here watching me and I burnt a lot of nervous energy in the dressing room," Woodhouse added.

"I'm looking to fight as often as I possibly can and, obviously, with not having had any amateur fights, it's a case of cramming in as much as I can and learning as I go."

Woodhouse fought at welterweight as part of a fundraising boxing night for the DebRA charity.
