BA extra baggage charge launched

13/02/2007

Travelling light could become popular with British Airways (BA) customers as the airline launches its new system of baggage charges.

Although the charges, originally announced earlier this month, have now commenced, changes will not come into full effect until September so travellers will be aware of the alterations.

"Our free luggage allowances, for both carry-on and checked-in luggage, remain among the most generous in the aviation industry," the company claims.

Passengers will pay £30 for every extra bag on domestic flights, rising to £60 on European flights and £120 for every extra bag on long-haul flights.

Customers can receive a 30 per cent discount on the charges if they pre-pay online.

"Many other airlines offer smaller free allowances and charge for additional items such as skis, golf bags or other sports equipment," a BA spokesperson said.

However BA states that in addition to the single item of baggage, travellers can also take one item of sporting equipment with them for free.

The airline also insists that the changes will only affect a small proportion of its passengers as more than 98 per cent of BA customers travel within their free luggage allowance.

All travellers to the USA, the Caribbean, Nigeria, Mexico and Brazil will still be able to check in two pieces of luggage free of charge.
