BBC facing strike action
02/02/2006
The BBC has confirmed that its radio staff are planning strike action later this month, which could affect some of the corporation's leading shows.
Broadcasting union Bectu is pursuing industrial action in light of the plans for merging some roles and cutting others, with more than 200 jobs expected to be lost.
Scheduled for February 15th and 22nd the strike could hamper flagship shows such as the Today programme on Radio 4 and The Breakfast Show on Radio 1.
Bectu negotiator Luke Crawley says there is genuine anger among members unhappy at the way the situation had been handled, despite talks aimed at averting the strike.
The radio broadcasting union had been seeking to reach agreement both on the cuts to hit the department and also the level of work being transferred to those whose jobs would stay.
The strike's origins date back more than a year, when the BBC's plans for reorganising its broadcast departments were unveiled.
However, hopes of a settlement had been raised last month when the union and the BBC issued a joint statement hailing the "considerable progress made in divisional talks".
