C&W may axe 485 jobs
27/02/2006
Telecoms operator Cable & Wireless is expected to axe hundreds of British jobs as part of a restructuring overhaul.
In a bid to turnaround less-than-robust performance over the next 12 months, C&W may slash 485 jobs in the UK with more to come, according to press reports citing a leaked document.
Last month, the firm announced it was splitting its international division and UK unit to reenergise itself going forward.
Following the acquisition of Energis for £631 million last August, C&W now employs more than 5,000.
John Pluthero, the new head of C&W's UK division, said the business will refocus itself on serving its large corporate customers, while closing down less profitable units serving small-to-medium sized firms.
C&W will give further details of the restructuring today or tomorrow.
In the leaked memo, Mr Pluthero said he envisioned the firm becoming the Armani of telecoms rather than "Top Shop", adding C&W was "no longer a place for the timid".
C&W UK has some 30,000 customers in Britain.
