Communication gong for M&S chief

30/11/2006

Marks and Spencer chief executive officer Stuart Rose has been recognised for the role his effective use of communication has played in the recovery of the once-troubled retailer.

He was last night named as the business communicator of the year by PRCA and Romeike at a London ceremony.

The annual award is handed to the chief executive officer of a FTSE100 company who has employed best practice public relations.

Mr Rose fought off competition from Tesco's Sir Terry Leahy and Justin King of Sainsbury's to claim the accolade, with previous winners including easyJet founder Stelios and Burberry's Rose Marie Bravo.

The award's organisers said the M&S chief stood out for employing simple language with real impact.

He himself explained he was delighted to be handed the award, adding: "For me, more than anything, the challenge I faced when I joined M&S was making people believe in themselves once again and getting everyone lined up together as a team, all pointing in the same direction."

Since being appointed to the company's top job in May 2004, Mr Rose has overseen a remarkable transformation at M&S, with the firm announcing a 48 per cent rise in full-year profits to £746 million back in May.
