Olympic scratch cards strike gold
03/06/2007
Around £150 million has already been raised for the 2012 London Olympics through the release of special lottery games, including scratch cards.
Olympics organisers say that the lottery games, which also include the Dream Number and interactive games, will help pay for new sporting venues and the new Olympic village in Stratford – the home for athletes from around the globe during the 2012 games.
It is hoped that £750 will be raised from the lottery games.
"London 2012 will be more than just a great summer of sport - it will be leaving a lasting legacy for generations, including building new, state-of-the-art facilities for elite and community use," said Olympic organising committee chairman Lord Coe.
"The money raised to date will play an important role in making sure we deliver a legacy that will outlast us all and be enjoyed in 2012 and beyond."
Around £2.2 billion of lottery money will be set aside for the Olympic games. Olympic Lottery Distributor chairman Janet Paraskeva said that the current returns from the lottery are ahead of schedule.
"There is a long way to go but we are ahead of schedule," she said.
Chief executive of the Olympic Delivery Authority David Higgins said that the lottery returns are an important achievement that "will help deliver a world-class London 2012 Games and a powerful legacy".
