Rooney resolves debt issue
16/04/2006
Wayne Rooney has settled his "outstanding issues" with gambling firm Goldchip after the Manchester United and England forward reportedly accrued debts of around £700,000.
In a statement the gambling group said the debt issue had now been "fully" resolved following talks between Stephen Smith and Paul Stretford of the player's advisers Proactive Sports Management.
The firm said the matter was now closed.
The 20-year-old earns £50,000 a week on the pitch and millions from sponsorship deals.
He allegedly amassed the debt by betting on horses, dogs and football matches he was not involved in.
The story comes amid speculation of a spat between himself and England strike partner Michael Owen over the alleged betting ring.
