Threshers secures Unwins deal
23/12/2005
Off licence chain Threshers has secured a deal to buy a number of Unwins stores after its high street rival went into administration.
Accountancy firm KPMG was called in earlier this week and has been in negotiations with a number of companies interested in purchasing Unwins' assets.
Reports this morning suggest that following discussions overnight a deal has been reached that will see Threshers buy 200 Unwins store.
KPMG said that the company eventually plans to rebrand them.
The agreement will be good news for Unwins staff, many of whom will now be taken on by Threshers.
Unwins closed its stores and laid off 1,800 employees on Monday.
The acquisition provides a shot in the arm for Threshers, which is itself facing tough competition from supermarkets.
