Flintoff ruled out of New Zealand Tests

10/05/2008

Andrew Flintoff has been ruled out of England's first two Tests against New Zealand with a side strain.

The injury, sustained during Lancashire's victory over Durham at Old Trafford yesterday, ends weeks of debate over whether the all-rounder should be selected to face the Black Caps.

A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board explained that Flintoff, who has only returned to full fitness after returning from ankle surgery, could feature later in the series.

"Andrew has been ruled unavailable for selection for the opening two Test matches against New Zealand and will be reassessed during the course of the Test series whilst receiving ongoing treatment," the statement said.

"This is a relatively common injury for fast bowlers but is in no way related to the left ankle injury Andrew has suffered from in recent times."

Flintoff, 30, said he was "bitterly disappointed" at his latest injury setback.

Although his batting has been disappointing for Lancashire during the County Championship he said his bowling had "been improving with each match".

"I've put in a lot of hard work to get to this point after ankle surgery last year and I know I can overcome what isn't a significant injury," he continued.

"It's very frustrating to have picked up an injury at this time but I want nothing more than to return to the England side and will continue to do everything required to make myself available for selection."

A 12-man squad devoid of Flintoff is expected to be named tomorrow for next week's opening Test at Lord's.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18587979-ADNFCR
