Gambhir and Watson charged
30/10/2008
Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir and Australian all-rounder Shane Watson have both been charged with misconduct over an incident during the third Test.
The charge levied by the International Cricket Council (ICC) relates to contact between the two men as Gambhir ran between the wickets during the 51st over of the match.
Television pictures appeared to show Watson raising his arm in the Indian opener's direction when he passed him after striking a six to bring up his century, while Gambhir seemed to elbow the Australian when returning for the second run.
At one point the two men had to be separated by in-field umpire Billy Bowden.
The left-hander has been charged with a level two breach of clause C1 of the ICC code, which states that players "shall at all times conduct play within the spirit of the game as well as within the laws of cricket".
Watson has been charged with a level one breach of the same regulation.
Gambhir went on to score a double century in his side's first innings before being bowled by Watson on the second day, as India compiled a substantial total of 613-7 before declaring.
The hearing will take place at the conclusion of the second day's play in New Delhi, with Gambhir facing a fine of between 50 and 100 per cent of his match fee and/or a ban of one Test or two one-day international matches.
If found guilty, Watson faces an official reprimand and a fine of up to 50 per cent of his match fee.
