Gillespie signs for Glamorgan
22/01/2008
Former Australian international Jason Gillespie has signed for county side Glamorgan for the 2008 season.
The 32-year-old paceman will move south to become the Welsh side's overseas player after two years plying his trade at Headingley for rivals Yorkshire.
Gillespie has 71 Test appearances to his name during which he has accumulated 259 wickets and proved a useful turn with the bat, picking up three centuries.
His haul places him sixth in Australia's list of all-time Test wicket-takers.
In addition the iconic bowler has featured in 97 one-day internationals since making his debut against Sri Lanka in 1996.
Glamorgan coach Matthew Maynard is certain that his new signing will not only prove a potent addition to his attack, but also help the development of other members of the side.
"Jason is a proven performer at international level and he is just the sort of experienced bowler we were looking for to spearhead our attack," Maynard told Glamorgan's official site.
"He will also be an important influence on some of the developing players in the dressing room. He's a top bloke and I know that he will fit in very well into our dressing room."
Gillespie is also looking forward to the challenge of driving the Sophia Gardens side into county championship contention.
"I can't wait to get stuck in and help Glamorgan be as successful as they can be in a new era under Matthew Maynard," he said.
