Hampshire in talks with Fletcher
06/10/2008
Hampshire have confirmed talks with former England head coach Duncan Fletcher over taking up a consultancy role with the county.
Following media speculation that Hampshire are pursuing the 60-year-old to act in an advisory role, Hants have now confirmed they are looking into the possibility of signing Fletcher, who resigned as England coach last year.
In a statement, the Hampshire board said they are "engaged in discussions" with Fletcher "with a view to a consultancy/advisory role over the period of next season".
"The purpose of this role is to review the structure of our cricket department and to conduct an audit of our coaching methods and procedures throughout the entire player development process," said Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove.
"In [newly appointed team manager] Giles White and [Hampshire academy director] Tony Middleton we have two excellent young coaches and managers of great potential and both are looking forward to the possibility of working with Duncan next season with a view to optimising our cricket management and development capabilities."
If he is appointed to the role, Fletcher will observe throughout the 2009 season before making his recommendations and proposals to the board of directors next September.
The news comes as Hampshire confirmed Giles White, 36, as their new manager, following a three-month stint in temporary charge following former manager Paul Terrys decision to stand down in July.
Under White's stewardship, Hampshire finished second in the Pro40 and third in the County Championship.
