ICC announces rescheduled Champions Trophy

15/10/2008

Cricket's world governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), has announced specific dates for the rescheduled Champions Trophy to be played.

The tournament, which was scrapped from the international calendar this year over security fears in the host country Pakistan, will now take place between September 24th and October 5th 2009.

The decision was made at a board meeting of the ICC in Dubai today, where it was also confirmed that the rescheduled event would be reduced from the original 17 days to just 12 days in 2009 and would take place in a single host city.

It is still expected that Pakistan will host the event, although no details have yet been decided over which city will be awarded the rights.

This will be announced "in due course", a statement from the board confirmed.

ICC president David Morgan said: "We are delighted to have slotted the ICC Champions Trophy into the Future Tours Programme in 2009 thus maintaining the primacy of ICC events, and we now look forward to staging an outstanding, memorable event next September/October."

Chief executive Haroon Lorgat added he was "hugely encouraged by the spirit of togetherness and teamwork shown by our members in ensuring we have found a place for the ICC Champions Trophy in next year's calendar".

"The tournament, with its new format of the top eight teams playing in a short, sharp event, is vitally important for the world game because it allows those members, as well as the developing cricket world, to grow the sport," he said.

"It is part of the ICC's commitment to the game and we can now look forward to a great event next year."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18827332-ADNFCR
