ICC backs Champion's Trophy in Pakistan
12/08/2008
The International Cricket Council has backed Pakistan hosting the Champion's Trophy despite concerns about the security situation there.
A series of bombs in the country in recent months, linked to political unrest following tumultuous elections in the last year, had led the ICC to reconsider its decision to allow Pakistan to host the tournament.
But now ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat, returning from a trip to inspect the security arrangements in place, has announced he is satisfied.
"Pakistan has been given the all-clear to hold the Champions Trophy," he said.
"I think personally from what I have seen and what I have heard, and beginning to witness some of the actual security implementation measures, I am quite impressed with the level of security in place."
A series of players have expressed their concerns with playing in the country and Mr Lorgat admitted it may be difficult to persuade them their personal safety is not at risk.
"To convince them is a big challenge and it's upon us to convey the message and to raise the confidence based on what we have seen and experienced that the security arrangements in place should be sufficient to have the event safe and secure," he added.
Among those Lorgat will have to work on is new England captain Kevin Pietersen, who made his views on the issue clear last month.
"I've definitely got reservations 100 per cent - about going to Pakistan," Pietersen said.
"I don't think pressure should be put on any individual, especially when you realise your life could be at risk."
New Zealand's cricketers have been recommended they should not travel while Australia, who refused to travel to Pakistan for a tour earlier this year due to security concerns, have hinted they could also boycott the trip.
